"ART PRISON"

Between Art and Nature. Favignana (IT)

The Santa Caterina Castle, an ancient fortress atop a 300-meter-high mountain, once served as a prison during World War II. The masterplan seeks to transform the site into a contemporary art museum, focusing on the reconfiguration of the path leading to the castle. The design concept overlays two distinct pathways, creating spaces where visitors can pause, interact with art, and appreciate the surrounding landscape.
Three strategically positioned architectural elements divert the original path, enhancing the ascent and offering opportunities for rest, shelter, and engagement with curated art installations. These structures are designed to integrate harmoniously with the natural environment, serving as focal points that enrich the visitor experience. Contemporary art installations will be placed both along the path and within the landscape, fostering a dialogue between nature, art, and architecture. The overall aim is to elevate the journey to the castle, transforming it into a multisensory, cultural experience, where the path itself becomes an integral part of the artistic narrative.
